Before joining EIPA, Maria Kleis worked as a legal adviser (competition law) in an international law firm in Brussels, as a short-term consultant for the International Labour Organisation, and as a legal advisor for a Bolivian non-governmental organisation in Germany. She holds a postgraduate degree in International Relations (2003) from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva and a LLM (2001) in European Law from the University of Maastricht. During her studies in Geneva she carried out an internship with the Legal Liaison Office of the United Nations. She has published several articles on state aid issues.

Avant de rejoindre l’IEAP en 2005, Maria Kleis a travaillé comme conseillère juridique (droit de la concurrence) dans un cabinet d’avocats international à Bruxelles, comme consultante à court terme pour l’Organisation internationale du travail, et comme conseillère juridique pour une ONG bolivienne en Allemagne. Elle est titulaire d’un diplôme de troisième cycle en relations internationales (2003) de l’Institut universitaire de hautes études internationales de Genève, et d’un Master en droit européen (2001) de l’Université de Maastricht. Durant ses études à Genève, elle a effectué un stage auprès du Bureau de liaison juridique de l’Office des Nations unies. Elle a publié divers articles sur les aides d’Etat.
